What does a housing officer do?

Your Housing Officer

Your housing officer is responsible for managing tenancies and supporting residents, including letting homes, signing up new tenants, handling tenancy changes, and helping residents sustain their tenancies. The role also involves collecting rent, addressing arrears, offering welfare and benefits advice, inspecting properties and communal areas, arranging repairs, and managing empty homes. Housing Officers investigate anti-social behaviour complaints, take enforcement action where required, and may prepare legal cases. They also work closely with partner agencies such as social services, the police, contractors, and community organisations to support residents and maintain safe, well-managed neighbourhoods.

Sue Pennock

I've been working for Unity for about 8 years and became a housing officer around 3 and a half years ago. I primarily work across Chapeltown and Meanwood. The bits I love best about being a housing officer are that it is hands-on work, it gives me the opportunity to really help people and give back to the community. I get to meet some brilliant people and listen to their stories and there's lots of opportunities for problem solving, which keeps things interesting. When I'm not working I like reading, cooking and taking care of my four legged friend Oscar; who tenants will often hear barking in the background if I'm working from home!

I have worked for Unity for around 3 years. I work around Chapeltown, Harehills and Burmantofts. I also work part time as a carer. I have two rescue cats, Loki and Thor. I was born and raised in Chapeltown.

As a Housing Officer, I am committed to supporting tenants and delivering high quality housing services across a wide area of Leeds and Huddersfield, including Burmantofts, Hunslet, Beeston, Crossgates, Kippax, and Heckmondwike. My role involves managing tenancy agreements, resolving housing-related issues, conducting property inspections, fire risk visits and overseeing lettings. No two days are ever the same, and I thrive on variety and challenges. Outside of work, I enjoy travelling, reading, and watching a variety of sports. These hobbies help me stay grounded, energised, and bring a fresh perspective to my professional life.
