Children's Art Day

Unity Housing teamed up with Groundwork Leeds, the local arm of the Groundwork Trust, to give residents on its estates a real say in how their estates are improved. Leicester Close, in the deprived Little London area of Leeds, had suffered a lot of damage from vandals and was badly in need of environmental improvements. After consultation with the whole estate, Groundwork Leeds produced plans to revamp the communal areas, which residents approved whole-heartedly. As part of the £23,000 improvement package for the estate (half funded by Unity Housing and half funded by grants obtained by Groundwork Leeds), Groundwork Leeds staff held an art workshop with local kids. Their ideas will be used in decorative metal-work in the close, which will be installed this Autumn.

"The kids have been involved right from the start," said Emma Ruane, Unity's Tenant Participation Officer. "They've helped by delivering leaflets about the improvements to the other residents on the estate and it's going to be great to see their art work immortalised in metal. We're looking forward to teaching them some gardening skills when the planting goes in."
