Shopping for a job in Chapeltown

Written by Helen Walker

20 Jun 2007 - Unity Enterprise has joined forces with Technorth Family Learning Centre to establish a new job shop based at the Chapeltown Enterprise Centre.

Concern with the high levels of worklessness in the Chapeltown area, especially amongst social housing tenants, prompted Unity Enterprise to join forces with the Technorth Family Learning Centre to establish a new Job Shop based at the Chapeltown Enterprise Centre. Support for the project came from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF) in 2006/7 and up to 3 staff are now working at the Enterprise Centre offering advice on job availability, job applications, interviews C.V.'s and training opportunities. NRF funding has been secured for the Job Shop for 2007/8.

The Job Shop is located on the ground floor of the building which has wheelchair access as well as toilet facilities for the disabled. Access to the jobs database and other sources of employment information is easily accessed via computer and staff are always available to offer assistance.

At the end of March 2007, nine months after the Job Shop first opened, almost 1,000 local people had accessed its facilities and 99 had found employment. Many others had been given advice on jobs and training opportunities.

Chapeltown Job Shop works closely with the Harehills Job Shop and staff in both centres are line managed by Technorth. Unity Enterprise and Technorth are members of the Jobs, Enterprise and Training (JET) partnership which is chaired by Job Centre Plus and is one of 3 working groups in the city dedicated to tackling worklessness.
