Unity does regeneration.....in Sri Lanka
22 Jun 2007 - In November 2005, Unity's Helen Walker joined a regeneration project helping communities after the devastation of the Tsunami.
In November 2005, Unity's HR & Office Manager swapped the desk job for something a bit more hands on. With the support of Unity, Helen joined a regeneration project helping communities along the south west coast of Sri Lanka, which were affected by the Tsunami in December 2004.
The project provided support to local people in a number of different settings, from helping communities to rebuild their homes to teaching English in a local orphanage. Days were spent organising recreational activities with children, clearing debris from beaches, planting trees along the shore to protect against another Tsunami, clearing out damaged houses, and painting classrooms, to name but a few, and another key objective was to support local people in setting up income-generating ventures. We all agreed this fitted the bill when it came to regeneration.
